Tamil Nadu Tests Vertical Farming Units in Urban Housing Blocks

Chennai Urban Water & Sewerage Board has launched vertical farming modules in the open spaces of apartment complexes in Velachery and Adyar. These hydroponic systems, using LED lighting and nutrient monitoring, produce leafy greens in limited space. Modules produce up to 50 kg of vegetables monthly per block, consumed by residents or distributed through micro-markets. An IoT dashboard monitors pump, nutrient balance, and temperature. Apartments report lower grocery costs and enhanced green cover. The model is part of a city-wide food-resilience effort integrated into ventilated housing frameworks.
